Use Case
VDI Implementation for a Regulated Financial Organization
Empower. Secure. Scale.
— Seamless Remote Access for Compliance-Driven Environments
The Client
A regulated enterprise operating across multiple data centers and business units in Hong Kong. The organization required a strategic revamp of its legacy Microsoft Exchange and Active Directory (AD) infrastructure to support hybrid cloud adoption, improve operational resilience, and meet evolving compliance standards.
The Challenge
The organization’s legacy Citrix-based remote access infrastructure was nearing end-of-life and lacked the agility and performance needed for modern work scenarios. Key challenges included:
-
Limited scalability and performance for concurrent users
-
Complex management and high operational overhead
-
Inadequate support for modern authentication and user personalization
-
Need for seamless migration with minimal disruption to operations
The goal was to implement a next-generation VDI platform that supports secure remote access, improves user experience, and integrates with existing infrastructure.
The Solution
Amidas proposed and implemented Omnissa Horizon, a VMware-powered VDI solution tailored to the client’s operational and compliance needs.
Scope of Work
-
Provisioned infrastructure to support 700 concurrent Virtual Desktops (VDs) and 700 concurrent Virtual Applications (VAs), scalable to 1,200
-
Deployed Horizon components including Connection Server, Unified Access Gateway (UAG), Enrollment Server, Dynamic Environment Manager (DEM), and Edge Gateway
-
Configured desktops with 4 vCPUs, 16GB RAM, and 500GB SSD storage, running Windows 11 Pro
-
Integrated FSLogix for persistent user profiles and ADFS SAML SSO for secure authentication with MFA
-
Enabled secure remote access without VPN using UAG
-
Leveraged existing server hardware and vSphere infrastructure to minimize cost
-
Delivered full documentation, training, and ongoing support

The Process
To ensure a seamless transition and maximum alignment with the client’s operational and compliance requirements, Amidas followed a structured, multi-phase engagement process:
01
Pre-Deployment
Preparation
Assessed hardware/software compatibility, reviewed Citrix configurations, and aligned with internal security policies.
02
Infrastrucuture
Deployment
Established Horizon infrastructure across production and DR sites, including SQL event database, Horizon core components, and SSO integration.
03
Desktop
Provisioning
Created Windows 11 master image and provisioned virtual desktops using Full Clone Technology.
04
Migration
Execution
Performed phased migration from Citrix to Horizon, maintaining parallel environments for fallback and validation.
05
Optimization
& Support
Conducted health checks, performance tuning, and provided post-deployment support and monitoring.
The Result
01
Modernized remote access with high-performance virtual desktops and apps
02
Improved user experience via Blast Extreme protocol and dual-monitor support
03
Enhanced security with SAML SSO, MFA, and FSLogix profile management
04
Reduced operational complexity through centralized management and automation
05
Seamless migration with minimal disruption and full compliance alignment
The Impact
The Omnissa Horizon VDI implementation enabled the organization to transition from legacy infrastructure to a future-ready remote access platform. The solution delivered secure, scalable, and user-friendly virtual desktops that support hybrid work and compliance — setting a new standard for digital workspace modernization.
